Kiwanis Children's Place

Sensory Room for Autistic Children

Funds are needed to equip an existing room at the Kiwanis Children’s Place as a Multi-Sensory Environment for children with special needs, especially autism. Specifically designed equipment would be purchased and arranged in the room in a manner that would stimulate the children’s awareness of their surroundings. There would be features with light, sound and lots of texture for touching. Some of the specific features are fiber optic lights, electronic keyboards, bubble columns, textured walls, wheel rotators and many others. Children with behavior problems would be able to use these activities to express themselves in appropriate ways. Several children would be able to participate in the various activities at one time. Based on preliminary planning by a certified specialist, the existing room can be equipped for about $20,000, which includes necessary electrical upgrades and the installation of dark carpeting for optimal effect.
