What does the intervention

process involve?

The intervention will involve:

  • Selecting the intervention team which will consist of one or more intervention specialists along with willing and appropriate family, friends, and others concerned for the well being of the substance abuser
  • Training the intervention team through meetings to discuss the individual and the issues surrounding his or her addiction. This will include instructions for dealing with denial that a problem exists and refusal of treatment
  • Developing an intervention plan which may include a semi-formal script to ensure that all parties know their role. The plan will include these key elements:
  • The element of surprise
  • Thorough preparation of the intervention participants
  • Agreement about the consequences that may be imposed if treatment is refused
  • Prior admission arrangements with an appropriate treatment center
