What is the Andrews Center?
The Andrews Center is the community mental health/ mental retardation center for Smith, Van Zandt, Wood, Rains, and Henderson counties. The doctors, nurses, therapists, counselors, and social workers of the Andrews Center serve around 6,500
consumers with mental disabilities.
What is Mental Illness?
The three diagnoses of mental illness that community mental health facilities like the Andrews Center work with in adults are Manic Depression (Bi-polar disorder), Schizophrenia, and Major Depression. In children, the Andrews Center can address other issues, like ADD/ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder, and emotional disturbances.
What is Mental Retardation?
Mental Retardation is a condition that occurs before age 18 that causes a person to have significantly below average intellectual and daily functioning skills.
Why does the Andrews Center need volunteers?
Recent legislation and budget cuts have forced many agencies that provide services for people with mental disabilities to downsize. It is now up to local communities to fill in the gap and address these unmet needs!
